    Behavior Management Strategies for the Elementary School Setting

    Behavior management is a facet of teaching that can be one of the largest causes of frustrations for educators, particularly novice teachers. It has even pushed many teachers to leave the profession. One of the root causes of the struggle is that teachers are not prepared with a repertoire of techniques to help them create the most effective learning environment. This study was conducted to determine effective behavior techniques for elementary teachers and future implications for supporting teachers with behavior management. The study involved ten elementary school teachers. Each teacher was given a survey that gauged their opinion on various behavior strategies and asked them to list their current effective strategies and how to best assist new teachers with behavior management. The surveys were anonymous. This paper will discuss the benefits of a variety of behavior strategies, such as creating a structured, predictable classroom, developing trusting relationships, reinforcing behavior expectations, correcting errors effectively, creating student engagement, and praising positive behavior. Upon completion of the study, it is determined that the best teachers of behavior management use many strategies to keep students engaged and motivated and to create a positive classroom environment where students want to be. This study indicates that behavior management is a critical factor in the success of a classroom and the overall happiness of teachers. Thus, the future of education lies in the importance of teacher education programs, as these programs should be restructured to include behavior management as a key component of teacher training

    Education, Media Coverage, and Ballot Roll-off: Evidence from Three Ballot Measures in Mississippi

    Ballot roll-off is an issue that continues to plague American society, leaving thousands of ballots incomplete every election cycle. In my research, I investigate what influences the likelihood of voters rolling off on three ballot measures in the 2020 Mississippi elections. I hypothesize that educational attainment and newspaper coverage in voters’ counties will have an impact on ballot roll-off. I observe previous research on the influences of ballot roll-off, and I combine the data I collected for voter turnout in Mississippi in 2020 and newspaper coverage of ballot measures from six sources to evaluate the influence of each of these factors individually and as variables in a regression analysis. My research finds that educational attainment is a better predictor of ballot roll-off than newspaper coverage. In my discussion and conclusion, I examine what these results mean for roll-off on ballot measures in Mississippi and the possible limitations of my research

    A Local Ecosystem Assessment of the Potential for Net Negative Heavy-Duty Truck Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Biomethane Upcycling

    Decarbonising heavy-duty trucks is challenging due to high journey power and energy requirements. With a growing fleet of commercial vehicles in the UK, biomethane can provide significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil diesel. Methane is a potent GHG with a global warming potential (GWP) of 23–36, therefore reducing levels in the atmosphere can have a significant impact on climate change. There are a range of anthropogenic sources of methane that could be collected and processed to provide sustainable energy (upcycled), e.g., agricultural waste and the waste water system. This paper explores the impact of using upcycled methane in transport in South East England, evaluating local sources of anthropogenic methane and the environmental and economic impact of its use for a heavy-duty truck compared to fossil and battery electric alternatives. Analysis concludes that the use of upcycled methane in transport can provide significant reductions in lifecycle GHG emissions compared to diesel, fossil natural gas or battery electric trucks, and give net negative GHG emissions where avoided environmental methane emissions are considered. Furthermore, upcycling solutions can offer a lower cost route to GHG reduction compared to electrification

    Modern Concurrency Techniques: An Exploration

    In this thesis, we investigate some of the options programmers have when writing a concurrent program. We explore the use of manually created threads, thread-pools, actors, and Software Transactional Memory. We use these techniques to implement case studies of various kinds: a video game, a physical simulation, an image-processing application, and a concurrent data structure. Through-out these case studies, we notice a common thread: concurrency, applied correctly, can improve the performance of a program—but the correct application may not be readily apparent. Concurrency is an important tool in the toolbox of the modern programmer, especially with the rise of multi-core architectures and the increasing prevalence of distributed systems. And like any tool, it is important to understand how and when to use it
